Del Canto Chambers Monthly Summary: August 17 – An unusual month

This year August has been an unusual month at Del Canto Chambers. Unlike previous years, there has been a lot of activity in our offices in Madrid, London and Doha, which has given us the opportunity to combine some holidays with business.

Also an unusual month due to the terror attacks in Barcelona. From Del Canto Chambers we condemn any kind of violence and any act that goes against people freedom and human values. Last Saturday we participated in the demonstration in Barcelona with the message #NoTenimPor (#IamNotAfraid) and #La Millor resposta es la Pau (Peace is the best answer), which followed by a breathtaking silent march along “La Rambla” honoring the victims of the attacks and celebrating diversity.

On August 4th in Doha, Qatar, our Firm facilitated the signature of the agreement to launch AS ARABIA, the largest digital sports portal that will deliver news to 25 countries in the Middle East and the North of Africa.

The CEO of PRISA, Manuel Mirat, along with the executive director of Dar AlSharq Group, Abdullatif Al Mahmoud; the director of AS, Alfredo Relaño, and the managing director of AS, Juan Canton, signed the creation of the new company that will manage this project.

Alfredo Relaño  mentioned: “Readers will see a site in classic Arabic that provides the most relevant sports news from around the world. What’s more, all the most important sports news will be covered from the Champions League to the Premier League, the NBA, Formula 1 and everything else,”

This agreement has positioned Del Canto Chambers as the leading Firm on digital strategy and media in the Arab world; after advising HuffPost in New York to launch the HuffPost Arabi.

Also this month, we have signed a contract with Al Jazeera Documentary Channel in Arab language to co-produce the Documentary “The Keys to Memory”, produced by Almutafilm, and directed by Jesus Armesto. Currently it has been viewed in different cultural centers and Universities in Spain, engaging public to deepen in their understanding of the historical Memory and in the hidden history of the “Al Andalus” and its glorious years. The Documentary will be shown in Seville on September 28th at the Cineforum organized by Fundacion de Las Tres Culturas del Mediterráneo.

With regards to the #Qatarblockade by some of its neighbours, it seems that there will not be an easy solution. In fact, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs H E Sultan bin Saad Al Muraikhi stressed that “there is no winner in the Gulf crisis because it is a problem affecting people, families, tribes, as well as international relations“.

León Fernando del Canto has recently published an article in The Peninsula Qatar entitled “ Twenty six millions reasons for Hispano Arab dialogue”. He says: in proposing a Hispano-Arab dialogue we have to understand the history we share, but above all, we need to organise forums in which we can get past the stereotypes and discuss the solutions to the problems of a global society that affects us all, so as to get to know each other better and above all to promote cooperation between our people.

In Spain, there is a growing interest among our clients in claiming for Floor Clauses and overpaid interests to Spanish banks keeps growing; our lawyer Laia Fernandez has written an article about a New ruling favourable for claims of mortgage costs. In top of being able to claim mortgage expenses (Notary fees, Land´s Registry fees, Property Appraisal and management costs among others), a First Instance Judge from Alcorcon, (Madrid), has sentenced Bankia to refund all above mentioned mortgage set up costs including the Stamp Duty Tax, which represents around 70% of the total in reclaimable costs.

With August coming to an end, we are offering to whoever may be interested a complimentary Tax Report outlining the person’s property and tax position in Spain, and summarising the person’s compliance with Spanish tax and legal regulations. As you know, our main expertise are in Anglo Spanish legal and tax matters for UK clients in Spain, and we offer services such as, Non Resident Tax for UK property owners, Wealth Tax for UK tax residents, Property Purchases and sales, Regional and Local Tax Submissions (IBI, AJD or ITP, among others), and Spanish Wills affecting your properties in Spain. The Arab community is getting ready for the Eid Al Adha celebration on Friday 31st, the beginning of a holiday season that last until September 9th. In a time of rising division, the spirit of unconditional generosity is more vital than ever. Every year on Eid, the Muslim community celebrates the spirit of unconditional generosity at the heart of the Abrahamic religious traditions, by distributing provisions and fresh food to neighbours and the poorest in the community simply because they are human beings, regardless of who they are or where they are from. From Del Canto Chambers we wish Eid Mubharak to those celebrating it.
