DCC Monthly Summary – September: Strengthening our UK team and launching of AS ARABIA Digital Sports Platform

This past month we strengthened our strategy and our team in the UK. Claudio Rodríguez Vera, tax adviser and abogado, moved to our office in Southampton, giving coverage to our clients in the Southeast region, while Julio Prieto has just become a European lawyer and is working from our offices in Strand in London.

We are launching an Anglo-Spanish claims department to offer our services to Britons with claims in Spain, such as bank abusive floor clauses and money lost in Off plan projects, among others. We also advise UK non-resident in Spain in dealing with the Spanish Tax Office, and we offer a complementary tax report at no cost. To strengthen this department, Antonio Aguilera joins our team, as of counsel. He is a Spanish lawyer with profound experience in bank procedures and bankruptcy.

Also this month, Nuria Monjas, has joined our team in Southampton as part of her internship program within our agreement with the ICAM, the Madrid Bar Association.

Based on the great response from British clients, we have been engaged in the creation of the Association of Spanish and British Consumers to protect consumers and facilitate class actions against banks, Spanish Tax office or any other entities implied.

Little by little our Firm is recognised as the leading counsel in global digital media strategies. Our colleague Leon Fernando del Canto held several meetings in New York related to HuffPost Arabi, future and had the opportunity to meet Lara Setrakian founder of News Deeply, with whom he is now serving as Advisory Board member. News Deeply recognizes journalistic integrity, with highest ethical standards, while exploring in depth any subject they write on or investigate.

Also in September, a presentation of AS ARABIA “The Arabic Digital Sports Platform” took place in the Diario AS headquarters. Our firm has facilitated the agreement between Diario AS and E-Management Dar Al Sharq group, and the launching of what will become the largest Spanish sports digital platform in the Arab world. During the event, an agreement of friendship and cooperation was signed between Grupo PRISA and Dar Al-Sharq Group for the promotion of Culture, Education and Sport in Arabic and Spanish

The presentation and the business lunch, in addition to Leon Fernando Del Canto and myself in representation of Del Canto Chambers, was, of course, attended by the key representatives of the main parties involved and main personalities of the sports world, Sheik Khalid bin Thani bin Abdullah Al Thani, Vice president of DAR AL SHARQ GROUP, Abdullatif Al Mahmoud, Executive director of DAR AL SHARQ GROUP, Mohammed Jaham A Al Kuwari, Ambassador of Qatar in Spain, Juan Luis Cebrián, Executive Chairman of PRISA, Manuel Mirat, CEO of Grupo PRISA and Chairman of AS, Alfredo Relaño. Editor-in-chief of AS, José Ramón Lete, Secretary of State for Sport, Alejandro Blanco, President of COE, Juan Antonio Samaranch, Vice president of COI

In London we attended an event at Instituto Cervantes, where Julio Crespo Maclennan, was stepping from his position of director of the Institute, in his place is stepping in Ignacio Peyro Jimenez. Julio Crespo main accomplishment has been to highly promote the Spanish language at the London School of Economics. Our firm, together with Instituto Cervantes, The London School of Economics and “El Pais”, has signed the agreement to develop “The Observatorio del Mundo de Habla Hispánica”

Back to Spanish matters, regarding Floor Clauses, Antonio Aguilera, has written an article entitled “Floor Clause Claims Time to be patient– Spanish Courts collapsed”, where he explains the current situation of the claims. He strongly recommends to avoid claiming banks directly to remove the floor clause and for the overpaid money to be reimbursed, with this procedure 90% of the claims are being refused by the banks.

He also mentions in this article that if you signed a private agreement, in which, your floor clause is cancelled, and you think you have to renounce to claim the bank, please know that these agreements are now being declared null by the Spanish Courts and, thus, you can still recover your money.

In Spain, we are living one of the most challenging times with the opposition of the Spanish government in regards to the independence of Catalonia. Our position has been always and will continue to be to uphold the Human Rights and Freedoms, under the principle of dialogue and cooperation for the benefit of all.
